Online Play Therapy for Children & Teens

Emotionally Attuned Virtual Support Across India & Internationally

Child-created beaded jewellery made collaboratively during an online Play Therapy session between therapist in Bangalore and child in Singapore

During one online session, a child in Singapore and a therapist in Bangalore made beaded jewellery together through a screen.

Not as a craft activity. As therapy.

The jewellery was the child's language that day - a way to create something tangible, to share it with someone who was fully present, to feel connected across 9,000 kilometres. The child's own hands. Their own room. Their own materials. The therapist, attentive and attuned, on the other side of the world.

This is what online Play Therapy can look like when it is done well.

Children do not stop needing emotional connection, attunement, or therapeutic support simply because therapy happens through a screen.

Online Play Therapy offers children and teens a safe, emotionally attuned therapeutic space - where they can express themselves, process experiences, build emotional regulation, and strengthen resilience from the familiarity and comfort of their own home.

I'm Anya Reddy, a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist based in Bangalore. I work with children aged 3–17 and their families across India and internationally - including expat families, relocating families, and families without access to specialised play therapy locally - through online sessions thoughtfully adapted to support connection, safety, and genuine therapeutic relationship, wherever you are.

Why Work with Anya for Online Play Therapy

Online therapy is only as good as the therapeutic relationship it builds. Technique matters less than presence - the ability to stay genuinely attuned to a child through a screen, to read what they're expressing through play and movement and creative materials, to co-regulate at a distance.

As a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist, my approach is fundamentally relational and nervous-system-informed. That doesn't change when sessions move online. I don't simply facilitate activities - I stay present, attuned, and responsive to your child throughout.

I have worked with families in USA, Singapore, Dubai and across India through online sessions - adapting the therapeutic process to each child's developmental stage, attention span, sensory profile, and home environment.

As both a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist and a PCI® Certified Parent Coach, I also support parents alongside the child's therapeutic journey. Families working with me online receive the same reflective, informed parent guidance as families working in person in Bangalore.

What shapes this approach:

  • Synergetic Play Therapy: Integrating nervous system regulation, emotional attunement, and attachment-informed care

  • Trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and LGBTQIA+ affirming: Tailored to each child's unique profile and family context

  • Adapted specifically for virtual work: Not simply in-person therapy moved to a screen

  • Dual expertise in children and parents: Supporting the whole family system, wherever you are

What is Online Play Therapy?

Online Play Therapy uses the same relational, developmentally attuned principles as in-person therapy - adapted thoughtfully for the virtual space.

Children express themselves through what they naturally reach for: drawing, imaginative play, toys, storytelling, movement, symbolic objects. What changes online is the setting. What doesn't change is the therapeutic relationship - the attunement, safety, co-regulation, and emotional presence that make the work meaningful.

Many children find it easier to engage emotionally from the familiarity of their own home environment. Being in a known, comfortable space can support regulation, openness, and expressive capacity in ways that a clinical setting sometimes cannot.

Children often naturally incorporate their own rooms, toys, pets, and artwork into sessions. The home becomes part of the therapeutic space.

Play is not a distraction from a child's emotional experience. It is often the way that experience is expressed, explored, and understood.

One thing worth saying directly: Online Play Therapy is not passive screen time. Children are typically moving, drawing, creating, imagining, building, and interacting throughout sessions - not sitting still in front of a screen.

Can Online Play Therapy Really Work?

This is the question most parents ask first. The honest answer is: yes - when adapted thoughtfully and relationally, Online Play Therapy can be deeply meaningful and effective.

What matters most in therapy is not the room. It is the relationship. A child who feels genuinely seen, attuned to, and emotionally safe will engage - whether that happens in a therapy room in Bangalore or through a screen from a bedroom in Singapore.

Research and clinical experience increasingly support the effectiveness of online therapeutic work for children, particularly when sessions are adapted to developmental needs and delivered within a consistent, trusting therapeutic relationship.

That said, online therapy is not the right fit for every child - and if I feel that a different format would better support your child's needs, I will say so openly and collaboratively.

What Families Say About Online Play Therapy

“Over the past year, Anya has been such a beautiful presence in our daughter's life. Choosing Play Therapy and choosing Anya was one of the best decisions we ever made for our child. Anya created a trustworthy, cosy virtual space where our daughter felt safe to be herself. Seeing her slowly grow in confidence and begin to take up space without apologising for it has been incredible. What touched us most was the bond Anya built with her. Even though our daughter is usually shy, she genuinely looked forward to sessions every week. Anya has a special way of helping children feel deeply heard and understood.”

What to Expect: The Process

Step 1: Complimentary 15-Minute Discovery Call

We connect briefly - you share your concerns, I explain how online sessions work, and together we explore whether this feels like the right fit. This is also the place to discuss time zones, scheduling, and any practical questions you have.

Step 2: Initial Consultation (75 minutes, online)

A deeper conversation to understand your child's history, emotional needs, and current challenges. We clarify goals and discuss what online sessions will look like for your child specifically.

Step 3: Ongoing Online Sessions (40 minutes, weekly)

Consistent weekly sessions build emotional safety, trust, and therapeutic momentum. Sessions are paced carefully around your child's nervous system and engagement capacity.

Step 4: Parent Support Throughout

Parents receive regular reflections, updates, and guidance to support emotional growth at home. For international families, parent support sessions can be scheduled flexibly across time zones.

What Online Play Therapy Can Support

Online Play Therapy may be especially helpful for children experiencing:

  • Anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or persistent worry (Read: Why Your Child Melts Down After School)

  • Emotional outbursts, big reactions, or difficulty regulating (Read: Why Your Child Explodes Over Small Things)

  • Grief, separation, family transitions, or relational stress

  • School-related stress, social difficulties, or withdrawal

  • Emotional shutdown or difficulty expressing feelings verbally

  • Challenges related to relocation, frequent travel, or life transitions

Online sessions may also support families seeking consistent therapeutic care despite scheduling, travel, health, or location-related limitations.

Children do not need to be in crisis to benefit from support.

What Children Need for Online Sessions

Very little. Sessions work well with paper, a few drawing materials, and whatever toys or objects your child naturally gravitates toward. A quiet, reasonably private space and a stable internet connection.

No special purchases are needed. Children engage most meaningfully using whatever is already in their own room - which is exactly as it should be.

How Parents are Involved

Parents are an important part of the therapeutic journey, even in online work. Depending on your child's age and needs, involvement may include initial consultations, regular reflections and updates, support around emotional regulation at home, and occasional help with session transitions for younger children. Older children and teens often engage fully independently.

The goal is not perfection - it is creating enough emotional consistency and support around your child's therapeutic process, wherever you are.

For Families Outside Bangalore & India

Online Play Therapy can be especially valuable for expat families, families relocating internationally, families who travel frequently, and families in cities or regions without access to specialised play therapy locally.

If you have built a therapeutic relationship and need to continue it across a move or time zone - or if you are seeking a therapist who understands the specific emotional terrain of relocation and transition - online work makes continuity possible in a way that geography otherwise would not.

Sessions are scheduled thoughtfully across time zones where possible. If you're unsure whether your time zone is workable, the discovery call is the right place to discuss this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Online Play Therapy as effective as in-person?

For many children, yes. Effectiveness depends less on the format than on the quality of the therapeutic relationship, the thoughtfulness of adaptation, and the consistency of sessions. Some children actually engage more openly from the comfort of their own environment. Where I feel in-person work would better serve a child, I'll say so honestly.

What does my child need for sessions?

Very little - paper, drawing materials, a few familiar toys or objects, and a stable internet connection. No special equipment or purchases. Children often engage most meaningfully with what's already in their room.

What if my child struggles to engage online?

Not every child connects most naturally through virtual work - and that's okay. Sessions are adapted creatively, but if online work genuinely isn't the right fit for your child, I'll talk with you openly about what other options might be more supportive.
